Michael Vaughan: Virat Kohli is the Cricket Equivalent of Cristiano Ronaldo
A Comparison of Sporting Giants
In the high-stakes world of professional sports, longevity is often the greatest test of an athlete’s character. Former England captain Michael Vaughan recently offered high praise for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) icon Virat Kohli, drawing a compelling comparison to football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. The two legends, while separated by their respective sports, share a common thread: an uncompromising commitment to physical health and elite performance standards.
Kohli has long been vocal about his admiration for the Portuguese forward, particularly regarding the work ethic required to remain at the pinnacle of one’s game well into their late 30s. Ronaldo, still competing at the highest level at 40, serves as the ultimate benchmark for longevity, and Vaughan believes Kohli operates on that very same wavelength.
The Discipline of a Champion
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Vaughan highlighted the meticulous daily regimen that fuels Kohli’s consistent output. It is not merely talent that keeps the former Indian captain relevant; it is the unseen labor. Vaughan noted, “You look at Cristiano Ronaldo, look at the way he looks after his body, and I think Virat’s the cricket equivalent of Cristiano. He probably doesn’t post it on social media, but I can imagine every morning, he’s probably in an ice bath, he’s probably in a cryo chamber.”
Vaughan went further, emphasizing the strict lifestyle choices that differentiate Kohli from his peers. “I’m pretty sure he doesn’t drink; he eats everything you should put in your body, unlike us. So, that’s gonna give him at least two or three more years. He does everything absolutely right, so I don’t see him finishing any time soon.”
Mentorship and Giving Back to the Game
The conversation surrounding Kohli’s impact extended beyond his physical condition. Former Australia Women’s captain Lisa Sthalekar added her voice to the discussion, focusing on how Kohli serves as a beacon for the next generation. She stressed the importance of seasoned professionals sharing their knowledge with younger talent.
Sthalekar remarked, “He has been a role model for a huge generation of Indian cricketers and global cricketers. I like the fact that he’s doing that. Because I think, as cricketers, we’re afforded these platforms. Individually, we’ve been successful, but the game has afforded us this thing. And I think it’s very important for all cricketers to give back, and it can be in different ways, but this is one way that he can do it.”
Continuing Excellence in IPL 2026
Kohli’s dedication is clearly translating to his performance on the field during the 2026 IPL season. As the primary run-getter for RCB, he continues to dominate the record books. During a recent encounter against the Punjab Kings, Kohli achieved a monumental milestone, surpassing 500 runs in an IPL season for the ninth time—a record unmatched by any other batter in the tournament’s history.
This achievement also marks the fourth consecutive season in which he has crossed the 500-run threshold, illustrating his extraordinary consistency. With 542 runs across 13 matches, he currently sits firmly in the race for the Orange Cap. His contribution against Punjab was particularly significant, with a composed 58 off 37 balls, maintaining an impressive season average of 54.2 and a strike rate approaching 165.
As Kohli continues to refine his game and mentor the younger generation, it is clear that his professional approach remains the blueprint for success. Whether he is taking an ice bath to recover or offering tactical advice to an opponent, Kohli’s presence ensures that the standard for cricket excellence remains at an all-time high.
