The India vs Afghanistan Squad Announcement

The Indian cricket selection committee recently raised eyebrows with their squad announcements for the upcoming Test and ODI series against Afghanistan, scheduled to commence on June 6th. While Shubman Gill has been handed the reins to lead both the red-ball and white-ball sides, it is the appointment of the vice-captains that has sparked intense debate. KL Rahul has been named the vice-captain for the Test squad, while Shreyas Iyer takes up the role for the ODI side. This decision means Rishabh Pant, who previously held the Test vice-captaincy and even captained India at home against South Africa, has been stripped of his leadership duties. This sudden change has not gone down well with former Indian batter Mohammad Kaif, who has openly questioned the selectors’ logic.

Kaif Defends Rishabh Pant’s Test Credentials

Speaking during a discussion on JioStar, the 45-year-old Kaif expressed his strong displeasure regarding Pant’s removal. Kaif was direct and unequivocal in his support for the dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman, stating that Pant had done absolutely nothing to warrant losing his leadership status. “Pant hasn’t done anything wrong,” Kaif remarked. “Both ODI and Tests are totally different formats.” Kaif pointed out that Pant’s performance in the longest format has been exemplary, particularly in 2025. Over the course of the year, Pant established himself as the fifth-highest run-scorer in Test cricket, racking up 629 runs across seven matches. Boasting an outstanding average of 48, the 28-year-old Delhi batsman also smashed two centuries and four half-centuries, cementing his position as India’s premier match-winner in red-ball cricket.

Conflating IPL Form with Test Leadership

A central point of Kaif’s criticism was the selectors’ apparent tendency to judge a player’s Test standing based on their performances in franchise cricket. Pant’s leadership of his IPL team, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), has faced scrutiny, with the team struggling to find momentum and Pant experiencing a dip in his individual run-scoring form in the T20 tournament. However, Kaif argues that using T20 franchise struggles to make decisions about the Test team is a fundamental error. “You are judging Pant based on his IPL captaincy skills,” Kaif argued. “There are talks that under his captaincy, the team (LSG) is losing, and the player himself is not scoring runs. But Rishabh Pant is India’s biggest match-winner in the Test format as a batter.” Despite being retained in the Test squad, Pant was left out of the ODI setup, with Ishan Kishan making a highly anticipated comeback to the white-ball squad.

The Selection Inconsistency: KL Rahul vs. Mohammed Shami

The controversy surrounding the squad selection does not end with Pant. Kaif also highlighted what he perceives as a glaring lack of consistency from Ajit Agarkar’s selection committee, pointing to the contrasting treatment of veteran bowler Mohammed Shami and newly appointed Test vice-captain KL Rahul. Despite proving his fitness and delivering strong performances over the past few months, Shami was once again ignored. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar explained that medical reports indicated Shami’s body was only ready for the rigors of T20 cricket. With spearhead Jasprit Bumrah being rested for the series, the fast-bowling duties will fall on Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, alongside Gurnoor Brar, who is expected to make his international debut. Kaif, however, found the age-centric decisions contradictory. “KL is 34, you don’t pick Shami because of his age, but appoint Rahul as the vice-captain,” Kaif pointed out. “The selectors have to be consistent. I would urge them to go by form and not look at the age factor. If a player is scoring runs and picking wickets, he should be selected. Again, would like to say Pant should have been retained as the vice-captain.”

Conclusion: Questions Left Unanswered

As the Indian team prepares to face Afghanistan, the decisions made by the selection committee will undoubtedly remain under the microscope. By prioritizing KL Rahul’s experience in the leadership group over Pant’s proven Test match-winning capabilities, the selectors have set a precedent that former players like Mohammad Kaif find hard to justify. Whether these leadership changes will translate into success on the field remains to be seen, but the debate over consistency and format-specific selection is far from over.
