A Season to Forget for Chennai Super Kings

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) era of dominance faced a reality check during the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The team’s campaign reached a dismal conclusion on May 21 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where they were handed an 89-run defeat by the Gujarat Titans in match 66. This loss served as their third consecutive defeat, officially eliminating them from the playoffs race and leaving the five-time champions in seventh place on the points table.

Ashwin’s Blueprint for a CSK Resurrection

In the wake of this disappointing campaign, former Indian all-rounder and CSK icon Ravichandran Ashwin has offered a candid assessment of what the franchise needs to do to survive in the evolving landscape of T20 cricket. Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Ashwin emphasized that the era of relying on past glories is over.

“Honestly, I will say this openly, CSK has to invest in quality,” Ashwin stated. He stressed that the management must prioritize building a squad with deep experience, specifically in the bowling department. According to the veteran spinner, the team currently lacks the necessary variety in both its fast-bowling and spin-bowling units, which is a fundamental requirement for success in modern cricket.

Moving Beyond the MS Dhoni Legacy

Perhaps the most significant portion of Ashwin’s critique was his insistence that the franchise must move on from the shadows of its past. While acknowledging the immense contribution of the legendary wicketkeeper-batter, Ashwin pointed out that the current team structure is no longer the Chennai Super Kings fans once recognized.

“This is not Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings. Not at all. That time has changed. And you have to keep in mind that success will come. But it will come slowly,” Ashwin remarked. This advice suggests that the franchise needs to stop looking backward and start constructing a new identity capable of meeting the modern demands of the league.

Bright Spots Amidst the Struggle

Despite the overall failure, Ashwin highlighted a few individual performances that provided a glimmer of hope. He specifically pointed to Shivam Dube and Kartik Sharma as players who demonstrated the technical ability and temperament to thrive at the highest level.

Regarding Dube, Ashwin noted that his batting output was a “very positive” takeaway from an otherwise forgettable season. However, he also voiced concerns about the team’s home-ground strategy, suggesting that the current squad composition at the Chepauk stadium does not play to the strengths of the personnel involved. Ashwin was equally complimentary of Kartik Sharma, praising his unique ability to manipulate the field, utilize his feet against spin, and play with a degree of versatility that is rare in today’s game.

A Season Defined by Absence

The 2026 campaign was historic for the wrong reasons, most notably the absence of MS Dhoni. For the first time in his storied IPL career, the legendary captain did not participate in a single match. A nagging calf strain, which initially sidelined him for the first two weeks of the tournament, persisted throughout the season, ultimately preventing him from making an appearance.

Under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad, the team struggled for consistency, ending the league stage with only six wins from 14 matches. With a dismal net run rate of -0.345, CSK joined the Mumbai Indians and the Lucknow Super Giants as major franchises failing to qualify for the playoffs. As the team looks toward the 2027 season, the challenge for the management will be to honor the legacy of their past while aggressively pursuing the structural changes required to return to the pinnacle of the IPL.
