Allan Donald, the former Bangladesh pace bowling coach and South African fast-bowling great, recently opened up about one of the most promising talents to emerge in recent cricket history — Nahid Rana. In a candid conversation on the Wisden podcast, Donald reflected on the first time he saw the young pacer, revealing just how electrified he was by what he witnessed.

A Spark in Chattogram

It was during a fast-bowling development camp in Chattogram that Nahid Rana first caught Donald’s eye. The camp brought together a group of promising young pacers from across Bangladesh for an intensive two-and-a-half-day training session. But amid the talent pool, one stood out — Nahid.

“I first saw Nahid at a camp,” Donald recalled. “They brought a whole bunch of young quicks from all over Bangladesh to Chattogram, and that’s where I met him for the first time.”

Raw Pace, Immense Potential

What struck Donald immediately wasn’t just Nahid’s physical build — lean and athletic — but his raw pace and natural aggression. “He’s a handful, that kid,” Donald said with a tone of admiration. “He’s quick, he’s lean, he’s just a fantastic athlete.”

So impressed was Donald that he didn’t hesitate to take action. He went directly to then-head coach of Bangladesh, Russell Domingo, and made a passionate pitch for the untested bowler.

“I was so excited about him that I told Russell Domingo, the coach at that stage, let’s chuck this kid in somewhere. He’s unknown, he’s raw, he’s quick,” Donald revealed.

From Camp to International Spotlight

Fast forward to today, and Nahid Rana has not only answered those early expectations but is exceeding them. His standout performances in the ODI series against Pakistan, followed by impactful outings in the PSL, the ODI series against New Zealand, and a strong showing in the recent Test series against Pakistan have cemented his status as one of Bangladesh’s most exciting cricketing prospects.

Fans and analysts alike have taken notice, with many hailing him as the spark Bangladesh’s pace attack has long been searching for.

Doing It Across Formats

For Donald, seeing Nahid thrive at the highest level brings immense pride. Once just a nameless face at a regional camp, Rana is now a regular across all international formats — a transformation Donald finds nothing short of remarkable.

“Now he’s doing it in all formats. It’s, it’s just amazing to see,” Donald said, his voice brimming with enthusiasm.

Nahid Rana’s rise is a testament to the power of nurturing young talent and placing trust in raw ability. With mentors like Allan Donald recognizing potential early and pushing for opportunities, Bangladesh’s future in fast bowling looks brighter than ever.

As the cricketing world keeps a close eye on Rana’s journey, one thing is certain: this is only the beginning.
