Agarkar: Sooryavanshi ‘picked himself’ in T20I squad, we’ve got ‘high hopes of h’im
The cricketing world is abuzz with the inclusion of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a prodigious 15-year-old talent, into India’s T20I squad. This selection, far from being a contentious decision, was described by India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar as an almost inevitable outcome. Agarkar emphasized that Sooryavanshi’s consistent and electrifying performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) essentially ‘forced’ the selectors’ hand, underscoring the immense promise he holds for the future of Indian cricket.
The Irresistible Rise of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Agarkar’s statement highlights a rare instance where a player’s raw talent and sheer dominance on the field make a compelling, undeniable case for national selection. The chief selector remarked, “I think he just has picked himself really. With his performances, he has almost forced us to pick him with how well he has played.” This powerful endorsement speaks volumes about Sooryavanshi’s impact, particularly given his tender age. It is not merely a single season’s flash of brilliance but a sustained display of high-octane cricket that has captured the attention of the cricketing establishment.
In the 2026 IPL season, Sooryavanshi was a pivotal figure for the Rajasthan Royals, almost single-handedly steering them into the playoffs. His incredible tally of 776 runs, amassed at an astounding strike rate of 237.30, showcased his destructive batting prowess. Such a statistical output, especially from a player so young, is virtually unprecedented in a league as competitive and demanding as the IPL. This remarkable season has now earned him a coveted spot in the India squad for the T20Is against Ireland and England, in addition to the prestigious Asian Games men’s cricket competition.
A Prodigy Forging Records and Reputation
Sooryavanshi’s journey to the national squad has been marked by a series of extraordinary achievements. At the precocious age of just 14, he etched his name into the record books as the youngest centurion in men’s T20s. This historic feat occurred during IPL 2025, where he smashed a breathtaking 38-ball 101 against the Gujarat Titans. Such an innings not only demonstrated his capability to score rapidly but also his fearlessness in confronting top-tier bowling attacks.
His performance in the most recent IPL edition further solidified his credentials. The manner in which he took on and dismantled some of the world’s best bowlers, including stalwarts like Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Starc, was particularly impressive. These crucial encounters convinced the national selectors beyond any doubt that Sooryavanshi was not only ready but eager for the challenges of international cricket. His ability to perform under pressure against elite opposition is a testament to his temperament and skill, qualities that are highly valued at the highest level of the sport.
High Hopes and Measured Expectations
Agarkar openly acknowledged Sooryavanshi’s youth and the early stage of his career, stating, “I know his age, and how young he is, and how early in his career but two IPLs in a row [he has done well].” He drew a clear distinction between the Under-19 level, where Sooryavanshi had also excelled, and the significantly higher demands of senior cricket and the IPL. The chief selector emphasized that the visible talent is undeniable, fostering a sense of optimism within the selection committee.
“We’re hopeful that if and when he gets an opportunity to actually play for the country, he shows us the same sort of ability that he’s shown,” Agarkar stated, while also tempering expectations with a dose of realism. He recognized that playing for the country would present “tougher challenges,” but stressed that Sooryavanshi has already displayed “great promise and temperament.” The selectors’ deliberations are always extensive, especially with the abundant T20 talent in India, but Sooryavanshi’s consistent brilliance ultimately simplified their decision.
A Cautious Approach to Test Prospects
While the excitement surrounding Sooryavanshi’s T20 exploits is palpable, Agarkar was notably more reserved when discussing the young prodigy’s prospects in Test cricket. So far, Sooryavanshi has played eight first-class matches, accumulating 207 runs with a best score of 93. This relatively limited exposure to the longer format means a patient and developmental approach is currently warranted.
Agarkar elaborated on this cautious stance: “I just explained his performances have made us pick him in the format that he’s excelled over the last couple of seasons of the IPL. With regards to red ball, I mean, he’s a kid. He’s just starting his journey, and I’m sure when the domestic season starts and he plays for his team, plays a bit of red-ball cricket, we will wait and observe.” The sentiment is clear: there is no desire to rush him into Test cricket, preferring to let him develop naturally in the domestic circuit. “At this point why jump the gun?” Agarkar questioned, indicating a focus on his immediate strengths.
The current emphasis is squarely on Sooryavanshi’s T20 capabilities. “We’re very excited with what he’s doing in T20 cricket. And hopefully, you know, us as selectors or the BCCI and the coaching staff can help him push in the right direction. At this point, we’re just focused on what he can bring to the T20 team, and we’ll take one step at a time,” Agarkar concluded. This measured approach ensures that while the nation’s “high hopes” are firmly placed on Sooryavanshi, his development will be carefully managed, allowing him to flourish across formats at the appropriate pace.
