Rahane: ‘When the team is struggling, it is important to show your character’ – KKR’s Resilience
A Leadership Philosophy Amidst Adversity
The 2026 Indian Premier League season was undeniably one of the most testing periods for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Despite being the most aggressive spenders during the late 2025 auction, the franchise faced a turbulent journey defined by injuries and significant personnel changes, including the difficult departure of Mustafizur Rahman. The team endured a challenging stretch, losing six consecutive completed matches, which put them at a precarious position on the points table.
However, throughout this turmoil, the team found stability in the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane. Drawing on his experience as a captain who famously steered a depleted Indian Test side to a miraculous turnaround in Australia, Rahane emphasized the necessity of unity. For Rahane, the mantra was simple: stay together as a collective unit, regardless of the results on the field.
The Final Stand and Strategic Focus
The conclusion of the league stage was marked by uncertainty. In their final match against the Delhi Capitals, the KKR squad intentionally avoided real-time updates from the Wankhede Stadium, where the Rajasthan Royals were competing against the Mumbai Indians. The focus remained entirely on their own performance. Despite their best efforts, KKR were eventually bowled out for 163, finishing seventh in the standings and missing the playoff cut.
Rahane, however, chose to look beyond the immediate disappointment, focusing on the development of his squad. He noted that the season was always destined to be difficult given the setbacks before the first ball was even bowled. He highlighted two emerging stars who proved to be the silver linings of the campaign: Kartik Tyagi and Anukul Roy.
Building for the Future: Tyagi and Roy
The development of young talent provided KKR with a solid foundation for future seasons. Kartik Tyagi, in particular, delivered a stellar performance, claiming 18 wickets and establishing himself as the third-highest wicket-taker among all Indian bowlers in the league stage. Anukul Roy also made his mark in his first full season, taking nine wickets in 12 innings and proving his mettle as a cool-headed finisher in successful chases.
Rahane expressed great confidence in these young players, stating, “When we sat down at the start of the season, I thought this was a great time for Anukul to come in and play each and every game. I believe that whoever has a good season in the domestic league, you carry that confidence forward. Anukul Roy just did that.”
Regarding Tyagi, Rahane lauded his clarity of thought. “He was really clear about his thought process. You will go for runs as a bowler, but as long as you are clear about what you want to do for your team, that is what matters. For these two, this is just the beginning.”
Standing Firm Under Pressure
When questioned about whether he considered stepping down mid-season to allow for a leadership reset—a move seen by some prominent captains in the past—Rahane remained resolute. He viewed leadership not as a position to be surrendered, but as a responsibility to be fulfilled during the hardest times. “For me, I have played my whole cricket with the right attitude. Character has always been very important for me. I am never one that steps down. When the team is struggling, it is important to show your character,” he asserted.
Rahane acknowledged that pressure is a natural byproduct of professional sport, but he urged his players to remain present. “When you lose five or six matches, your mind goes to the past and future, but it is important to stay in that moment. Things can turn around anytime. I told the players after losing six games that it just takes one game to change things around.”
A Bittersweet Farewell
While IPL 2027 remains on the horizon, Rahane preferred to close the chapter on the 2026 season by celebrating the fighting spirit of his group. Despite the bittersweet nature of not qualifying for the playoffs, he expressed immense pride in the way his team conducted themselves. The comeback effort after the initial seven games showed the true potential and character of the KKR squad. For Rahane, the lessons learned from this challenging year will serve as the catalyst for growth and future success.
