Allison, Benkenstein give Eagles wings before Middlesex implode
A Dominant Display at Merchant Taylors’ School
The 2026 Vitality Blast season continues to deliver high-octane drama, and the latest clash between Essex and Middlesex was no exception. Under the clear skies of Merchant Taylors’ School, Essex put on a masterclass of recovery and clinical execution, running out comfortable winners by 60 runs. The headlines were deservedly grabbed by two young prospects whose batting masterclass turned the game completely in the visitors’ favor. Indeed, Allison, Benkenstein give Eagles wings before Middlesex implode in spectacular fashion, keeping Essex’s momentum surging with a third consecutive victory.
Middlesex, having opted to bowl first, initially looked to have made the correct decision on a pitch that offered plenty for the bowlers early on. However, they were ultimately dismantled by a spectacular 133-run partnership before their own batting lineup crumbled under relentless pressure from the Essex bowlers, eventually getting bowled out for just 116.
Early Shocks for the Eagles
The match began with Middlesex finding early joy after winning the toss and electing to field. Their decision paid immediate dividends when Paul Walter was dismissed early, skying a delivery from Noah Cornwell straight to Eathan Bosch at fine leg. The early blow brought Michael Pepper to the crease, and he looked intent on shifting the pressure back onto the hosts. Pepper launched a brief but aggressive counter-attack, smashing three boundaries in just four balls off the bowling of Bosch.
However, Pepper’s aggression proved to be his undoing. Attempting a fourth boundary, he attempted to scoop Bosch but only succeeded in finding Josh De Caires at square leg. De Caires took an exceptional catch, tracking the ball over his shoulder as it dropped, leaving Essex in a spot of bother at 26 for 2. At this stage, Middlesex appeared to have the upper hand, but they had not factored in the resilience of Essex’s middle order.
The Partnership: Allison and Benkenstein Rebuild
With the Eagles in early trouble, Charlie Allison and Luc Benkenstein came together to construct a defining partnership. Initially, the pair focused on consolidation, assessing the pace of the wicket and rotating the strike to steer Essex to 65 for 2 at the halfway stage of the innings. It was a mature display of rebuilding, but the true fireworks were reserved for the second half of the innings.
As the partnership progressed, the acceleration was swift and brutal. Benkenstein was the first to shift gears, targeting Seb Morgan by clubbing a massive six over the boundary ropes. He followed this up by ruthlessly pulling a short delivery from Ryan Higgins toward the pavilion. His aggressive intent cleared the path for Allison, who had been more than content to play second fiddle during the early stages of their stand.
Once Allison found his rhythm, however, he matched Benkenstein blow for blow. The turning point of the innings came in an over bowled by Bosch, which went for a staggering 27 runs. Allison caught the mood perfectly, launching successive sixes into the crowd. Even the otherwise disciplined Tom Helm was not spared, with Allison dispatching one of his deliveries with equal disdain. In total, the duo shared a breathtaking stand of 133 runs from just 91 deliveries.
Late Wickets and a Competitive Total
Both batsmen fell before the innings could reach its conclusion, but their job was already done. Benkenstein was the first to depart, falling for a well-made 67 off 56 balls, including two sixes. It took a moment of individual brilliance to dismiss him, as Tom Helm claimed a sensational caught-and-bowled opportunity off a steepling top edge. Allison followed shortly after, clean-bowled by a pinpoint yorker from Seb Morgan after striking three sixes in a brilliant 37-ball 61.
Despite the late wickets, and aided by some loose bowling from Middlesex that included two expensive sets of five wides, Essex finished their 20 overs on an imposing 176 for 5. Helm and Cornwell had bowled admirable spells, but the indiscipline elsewhere in the bowling attack left Middlesex with a mountain to climb.
The Middlesex Chase Implodes
Middlesex’s response was faltering from the very first ball. Shane Snater set the tone for the second innings by clean-bowling opener Adam Rossington for a golden duck. Max Holden tried to inject some momentum into the chase, sweeping Charlie Bennett for a maximum, but the pitch was showing signs of being slightly two-paced, making fluent strokeplay incredibly difficult.
Any hopes of a Middlesex recovery were swiftly snuffed out by Zaman Akhter. Akhter struck twice in the space of just four deliveries, removing Josh De Caires and then sending Ben Geddes back to the pavilion for a duck. With Middlesex reeling, Holden continued to struggle to find timing and was eventually clean-bowled by Wiaan Mulder, who got one through his defenses as the required run-rate soared out of control.
Thain’s Career-Best Spell Seals the Win
With the boundaries drying up and the pressure mounting, the Middlesex middle order completely collapsed. Former England Under-19 star Noah Thain stepped up to deliver a career-best performance, tearing through the lower order. In his very first over, Thain claimed the wickets of Leus du Plooy and Luke Hollman, both of whom perished trying to clear the boundary, caught by the fielders waiting on the fence.
Thain was not finished yet. In his next over, he sent Eathan Bosch packing to leave Middlesex’s batting card in tatters. Thain finished with outstanding, career-best figures of 3 for 11 from his spell. While Ryan Higgins played a defiant hand, hitting 36 runs including two sixes, he lacked any meaningful support. Higgins was eventually the ninth wicket to fall, caught in the deep as he attempted to clear the boundary.
To wrap up a thoroughly miserable day for Middlesex, Noah Cornwell was struck on the arm in the act of being bowled, sealing their third successive defeat. Essex, on the other hand, celebrated a resounding 60-run victory, showing why they are one of the form teams in the 2026 Vitality Blast.
