Yo Mahesh appointed TN head coach; Sandeep Patil named Mumbai mentor
A New Era for Tamil Nadu Cricket
In a strategic move to address a challenging period for the state side, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has officially confirmed that Yo Mahesh appointed TN head coach; Sandeep Patil named Mumbai mentor for the upcoming domestic campaign. The appointment of the 38-year-old former seamer marks a significant shift in leadership, as the association looks to move past the frustrations of the previous season.
Yo Mahesh, who retired from all forms of professional cricket in 2020, brings a wealth of experience to the role. Throughout his playing career, he was a formidable presence, claiming 108 wickets in 50 first-class appearances and 93 wickets in List A cricket at an impressive average of 24.67. Having previously represented franchises like Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, Mahesh transitions into this head coaching role after successfully overseeing Tamil Nadu’s Under-19 squads last season.
Addressing Past Shortfalls
The decision to appoint Mahesh comes after a disappointing 2025-26 season where the team struggled across all formats. Following a winless run in the first four rounds of the Ranji Trophy, the TNCA had previously experimented by splitting coaching duties between M Senthilnathan and M Venkataramana. Unfortunately, the results remained elusive, with the team failing to qualify for the knockouts in the Ranji Trophy, the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) believes that having a unified head coach for both red-ball and white-ball formats will provide the stability required to reclaim Tamil Nadu’s status as a domestic powerhouse. To support this transition, J Hariesh, the head coach of Lyca Kovai Kings in the TNPL and an assistant batting coach for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, has been named to assist Mahesh during the white-ball leg of the domestic season.
Mumbai Adds Experience with Sandeep Patil
While Tamil Nadu looks to youth, the Mumbai Cricket Association has opted for legendary wisdom by bringing in Sandeep Patil as a team mentor. Patil, a member of the iconic 1983 World Cup-winning Indian squad, brings a decorated history of playing and coaching to the Mumbai setup. Between 1980 and 1986, Patil featured in 29 Test matches and 45 ODIs, playing a crucial role in India’s maiden World Cup title with his aggressive batting style.
Patil’s coaching credentials are equally impressive, having previously guided the India A team and the Kenyan national side on the international stage. His mentorship is expected to provide a strategic edge to a Mumbai team that remains a perennial contender in domestic cricket.
Stability at the Helm
Complementing Patil’s addition is the decision to retain Omkar Salvi as Mumbai’s head coach for a fourth consecutive season. Salvi, who has enjoyed significant success in the IPL as a bowling coach for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru—helping them secure back-to-back titles—is widely credited for the technical development of the Mumbai bowling unit. With Salvi’s tactical acumen and Patil’s veteran insight, Mumbai appears well-prepared for the rigors of the upcoming domestic schedule.
As the 2026-27 season approaches, both Tamil Nadu and Mumbai are signaling clear intentions to dominate the national circuit. With these coaching announcements, the focus now shifts to player selection and training, as fans and analysts alike wait to see how these leadership changes translate into performance on the field.
