Pakistan bowling coach Umar Gul has issued a formal clarification regarding the supposed heated altercation with fast bowler Shaheen Afridi during the Test match against Bangladesh in Sylhet. The incident, which quickly became a talking point on social media, occurred during the second day of the second Test, prompting immediate speculation and concern among cricket enthusiasts.

The Incident That Sparked Speculation

The alleged confrontation unfolded near the boundary ropes between Gul and Afridi, who was benched for the second Test after participating in the first. Videos and eyewitness accounts suggested a tense exchange, with the left-arm pacer reportedly saying something to Umar Gul. When the bowling coach responded, Shaheen appeared to ignore him before walking away. This led to varied interpretations, with some suggesting a breach of respect from Afridi towards his coach, while others speculated that the discussion revolved around pacer Hasan Ali’s head injury.

Hasan Ali sustained his injury on the first day of the match, falling headfirst while attempting to take a return catch. The sight of the interaction between Gul and Afridi, combined with Hasan’s injury, fueled the rumors of a rift within the team.

Umar Gul’s Official Clarification

Addressing the media during the press conference after the third day of the Test, Umar Gul provided a comprehensive explanation, debunking the rumors and clarifying the true nature of the conversation. Gul confirmed that the discussion was indeed about Hasan Ali’s injury and the critical possibility of having to bring in a concussion substitute.

Reflecting on the widespread misinformation, Gul stated, “When I woke up yesterday morning, someone had tagged me on X and had written ‘Shaheen is not listening to the coach. He is trying to send Shaheen inside, but he did not listen.’ This incident actually happened when Hasan Ali fell and hit his head. Shaheen was sitting outside at the time.”

Gul further elaborated on the specifics of their conversation: “Shaheen has a habit of taping his elbow for protection before going on to bowl. So over there, I was discussing with him about the concussion substitute. I believe you are given half an hour to take the decision. The match referee gives you 30 minutes to inform him about who the substitute will be. So I told Shaheen, ‘tape your elbows just in case we need you to bowl. God forbid something serious happens to Hasan, then you are our only option.'”

The coach also clarified a visual misinterpretation: “By then, Sarfaraz [Ahmed, Pakistan Head Coach] had also arrived downstairs, and Shaheen told him that Hasan had been hit on the head. It looked like Shaheen Shah Afridi was gesturing towards his brain, to maybe comment on someone else’s intelligence, but it was nothing like that.”

Gul emphasized the necessity of clearing the air: “So, I thought that we should clear this issue. Since yesterday, a lot has been said on social media. Even our friends in the media have been messaging me repeatedly, but there is nothing like that. Shaheen Shah Afridi’s reaction was purely because of Hasan Ali’s injury. We didn’t know the camera captured us,” Gul concluded, aiming to put an end to the baseless speculations.

Ultimately, Hasan Ali was declared fit to continue playing and made a significant contribution, taking two wickets in each innings of the match.

The Context of the Bangladesh Test Series

The incident occurred amidst Pakistan’s challenging two-match Test series against Bangladesh, part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship. Bangladesh had already secured a commanding victory in the first match by 104 runs in Mirpur, setting a high bar for the visitors.

Despite Shaheen Afridi’s absence from the second Test, his presence and form have been a topic of discussion. While he hasn’t been in his best rhythm recently, his absence was undoubtedly felt by the team, especially given the crucial nature of the series. The series saw strong performances from Bangladesh’s key players. Litton Das shone with an excellent century in the first innings and followed it up with a fifty in the second. Nahid Rana and Taijul Islam were instrumental with the ball, each taking three wickets in the first innings to establish a healthy lead for Bangladesh.

In the second innings, veteran Mushfiqur Rahim made a record-breaking hundred, further solidifying Bangladesh’s dominant position. This set Pakistan a monumental target of 437 runs in the fourth innings, a chase that, if successful, would be the highest in the history of Test cricket.

For Pakistan, one of the few bright spots in this challenging Test was the performance of Shaheen Afridi’s replacement, Khurram Shahzad. Shahzad impressed by taking four wickets in each innings, showcasing his potential on the international stage.

Should Bangladesh clinch victory in this second Test, they will complete a resounding 2-0 whitewash over Pakistan, a significant achievement that would also propel them to fifth place on the World Test Championship points table, highlighting the critical stakes involved in every match of the championship cycle.
